How Do I Become a Christian?

Realize that you are a sinner

You're a pretty good person, right? Have you ever stolen something? Lied about anything? Looked at a man or woman who isn't your spouse lustfully? Probably everyone who reads this will answer "yes" to at least one of these. If you have, you are a sinner. Here's a spoiler: everyone is a sinner. We're born into it and can't escape it. But there is a way out.

Recognize and believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for you

God sent Jesus to Earth to show us how we should live, and most importantly, to be the ultimate sacrifice that frees us from our sin. The price for your sins has already been paid. It's a gift for you. If you continue reading below, you will be invited to accept that gift.

Repent of your sin

If you have realized that you are a sinner, and that Jesus gave His life to free you from that sin, then you are ready to repent. To repent means to feel sincere regret about your wrongdoing (sins). If you truly do feel that, you are ready to change your ways and turn away from sin. But how?

Receive Jesus Christ into your life

Becoming a Christian is about inviting Jesus to reside in you. When you realize you are a sinner, recognize Jesus died for your sins, and feel genuine remorse for them, all you have to do is invite Jesus in. You could say this prayer:

“Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and life. I confess You as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me. Amen.”

That's It!

If you said that prayer, and meant it in your heart, that's it, you are a Christian! Jesus will now being to work in your life in ways you didn't know were possible.

What Now?

My Testimony

Website creator: Per Anderson

The simplicity of it all eluded me for seven years as I did not recognize these simple steps, but instead floundered about thinking I would achieve a relationship with God by my efforts. Rather, the way lay in the simple understanding that it all rested upon an interaction with Jesus the Son of God. Rather than any effort or work on my part, I simply had to recognize that Jesus the Son of God was calling me personally to a special kind of covenant, the one in which He had done all the work for me. It did not rest in any way on a list of spiritual “pushups” that would somehow open the door into an experience of Christianity for me.

I slowly came to the point of recognition that my mind’s knowledge of the way of salvation needed to become a matter of my heart. Was I ready to surrender my heart to Jesus, this King of Love, who lived and died on a cross so long ago? The truths about Him, to which I gave mental ascent, had to move to the level of the heart. It needed to reach my heart,. Would I surrender my heart (my life personally) just as it was, to Him? This I finally did, and said, “I give my heart to you.”

The immediate response I heard (and felt within) from Jesus was “I’ll take it.” At that moment, I experienced what it was to become a Christian as in both mind and heart I felt the love and acceptance of Jesus, the Son of God.”
